Katy Jo Wright has gotten to know the personal stories of many people with disabilities in her 24 years at Microsoft, first as a recruiter and now as the head of a global effort to make gaming more inclusive. She’s learned from gamers with limited mobility, engineers who have low vision, people who are neurodivergent and love puzzle games — and it’s helped her build more inclusive teams and products. But the one story she has struggled to embrace is her own. She has been reluctant to widely share her experience with Lyme disease, even while encouraging people to “bring their authentic selves” to work. She didn’t categorize her bouts of crushing pain, fatigue, memory lapses and organ damage as an integral part of her identity. She didn’t think of herself as someone with a disability.

This cross-sectional study aims to determine the prevalence of fibromyalgia in adults residing in Al-Karak, Jordan. The city’s unique demographic and environmental characteristics may influence the occurrence of fibromyalgia among its adult population. The study aims to address gaps in knowledge, provide localized insights, and shed light on fibromyalgia’s burden on the community’s health. Accurate prevalence data aids healthcare planning and resource allocation.

Advocates Seek Office Of Post-Viral Illnesses; Long COVID Cases Rise

Researchers and advocates are asking the National Institutes of Health to create an office specifically dedicated to researching post-infectious conditions like long COVID and chronic Lyme even as the number of Americans reporting long COVID symptoms has jumped dramatically. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 6.8% of Americans report long COVID symptoms, which can include fatigue, brain fog, nerve issues, breathing problems and gastrointestinal problems. While some health officials have argued against using the term long COVID, stating it is no different than other post-viral conditions, even non-COVID related post-viral illnesses can be debilitating for patients.

Looking For A Beam Of Light To Heal Chronic Pain

Chronic pain (CP) is a leading cause of disability and a potential factor that affects biological processes, family relationships, and self-esteem of patients. However, the need for treatment of CP is presently unmet. Current methods of pain management involve the use of drugs, but there are different degrees of concerning side effects. At present, the potential mechanisms underlying CP are not completely clear. As research progresses and novel therapeutic approaches are developed, the shortcomings of current pain treatment methods may be overcome. In this review, we discuss the retinal photoreceptors and brain regions associated with photoanalgesia, as well as the targets involved in photoanalgesia, shedding light on its potential underlying mechanisms. Our aim is to provide a foundation to understand the mechanisms underlying CP and develop light as a novel analgesic treatment has its biological regulation principle for CP. This approach may provide an opportunity to drive the field towards future translational, clinical studies and support pain drug development.

In the eyes of the medical community, myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, or ME/CFS, has had a legitimacy deficit for decades. Now, a team of 75 multidisciplinary scientists and clinicians from across the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and collaborators have completed an extensive inpatient study of a carefully selected group of people with postinfectious ME/CFS, published in Nature Communications.
